If you need a walkway or easy access, compare with 10 × 20 ft. Unit height and doors vary.

Floor space matters. So does access.

Storage units are usually named by floor dimensions. A 10×10 unit has 100 square feet, but its useful capacity also depends on clear height, door size, columns and what the facility allows you to stack.

Choose extra room when you need:

  • a walkway to reach boxes at the back;
  • regular access during the rental;
  • space for sofas, tools or furniture that cannot stack;
  • room to add more items later.

Storage unit size FAQ

What size storage unit do I need?

A 5×5 or 5×10 unit can work for some studio loads, 5×10 to 10×10 is often compared for one bedroom, 10×10 to 10×20 for two bedrooms, and larger units for three or more bedrooms. The right size depends on furniture, ceiling height and how often you need access.

What fits in a 10×10 storage unit?

A 10×10 unit has 100 square feet of floor space. With an 8-foot ceiling it has about 800 cubic feet before allowing for door clearance, awkward shapes and a walkway. Many facilities compare it to belongings from a small two-bedroom home.

Should I choose the next storage size up?

Choose more room when you need a walkway, frequent access, bulky furniture, poor stackability or space for more items later. A tightly packed unit can be difficult to use even when everything technically fits.

Does unit height matter?

Yes. Our cubic-foot references assume an 8-foot ceiling for easy comparison, but actual clear height, doors, columns and rules differ. Check the unit's exact interior dimensions.
